Mist: “I know you’ll read question 2 first.”
What is Yanyou?
An app for smokers 20+ in Taiwan: find legal smoking areas nearby, and meet someone in an anonymous 5-minute voice call. We don't sell or promote tobacco.
Does Yanyou encourage smoking?
No. It helps adults who already smoke follow the law: find a designated area and smoke there, away from non-smokers. Nothing rewards smoking more, and we don't sell or promote tobacco. Want to quit? Call the quitline 0800-636-363 (toll-free).
I want to quit. Can Yanyou help?
Turn on Quit mode to count your smoke-free days and unlock wardrobe items at milestones. Yanyou stops reminding you about nearby smoking areas, though the map still works. Your profile shows “Quitting · day N” publicly by default; you can turn it off in Settings › Privacy. While you're in Quit mode, you can choose to match only with people who are quitting, for free. When a craving hits, open “Beat the craving” for a 1–3 minute breathing exercise with Mist. It's not medical treatment; for help quitting, call the quitline 0800-636-363 (toll-free).
Where does the smoking-area data come from?
262 official spots (Taipei City Department of Health open data), 15 venues (Taichung City Public Health Bureau register) and 37 public areas mapped on OpenStreetMap (ODbL). 120 smoking rooms inside venues are counted separately (venue rules apply). Every spot shows its source. Abroad: Japan 301, South Korea 122, Singapore 70, Thailand 28, Malaysia 15, Vietnam 5 smoking areas from OpenStreetMap (ODbL); Singapore also includes NEA designated smoking areas (data.gov.sg). Rules differ by country; follow local rules.
Are the locations accurate?
For reference only — follow on-site signs. Government data can lag, register pins mark the venue rather than the room, and OpenStreetMap is volunteer-mapped and unverified.
What is the fine for smoking in a non-smoking area in Taiwan?
Smoking where it is prohibited can be fined NT$2,000–10,000 under Article 40(2) of Taiwan's Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act (amended 15 Feb 2023). General information, not legal advice. Abroad, penalties differ by country, and some are stricter than Taiwan's (Singapore and Thailand, for example); many Japanese cities also ban smoking on the street. Follow local signs and official guidance. Official pages: Japan (MHLW), South Korea (Ministry of Health and Welfare), Singapore (NEA), Thailand (Department of Disease Control), Malaysia (Ministry of Health), Vietnam (Ministry of Health).
Can people under 20 use Yanyou?
No. Sign-up needs a date of birth, and under-20s can't register. If you meet someone who seems under 20, report them in the app: we review it first, and if confirmed we ban the account.
How does Yanyou protect my privacy?
You stay anonymous until you both add each other. Check-ins are visible only to you by default, and photos stay private: others see your Mist companion until you approve their request. A check-in stores which spot, not your coordinates. Calls are not recorded, contact details in messages are masked, and we don't sell data or use ad trackers. See the privacy policy.
Is it free?
The map is free, and free accounts get calls too: men get 3 free 5-minute calls a day, and women's calls are unlimited. New users can start a 7-day free trial (150 call minutes) within 48 hours of signing up. Anyone signed in can buy extra call minutes. Yanyou Plus: 12 months NT$2,990 (1,000 call min every 30 days), 6 months NT$1,790 (800 call min every 30 days), 3 months NT$990 (700 call min every 30 days), 1 month NT$390 (600 call min every 30 days). Renews automatically via the App Store; we remind you before renewal and you can cancel any time. Final prices in the app.
Why are some restaurants or cafés listed?
OpenStreetMap volunteers tag some venues as having a smoking room. We list them as "Smoking room inside a venue — follow the venue's rules", after public areas. Not a recommendation; may be out of date.
Is the random voice call safe?
It's anonymous until you both add each other. Links, phone numbers and messaging IDs are masked. Anyone you report is blocked for you right away, and we review the report.
When can I make random calls?
Random (anonymous) calls open nightly 20:00–01:00 Taiwan time, so everyone is online together and matches come quickly. Calls with friends work any time.
How do I contact Yanyou?
Email yanyouapp@gmail.com. The support page has help links and what to include.
Where can I download it?
On the App Store, free. iPhone only for now.
I found a spot that is wrong. What should I do?
In the app, open the spot and tap "Report this spot". OpenStreetMap spots can also be fixed on openstreetmap.org.
Does Yanyou cover e-cigarettes?
No. They're heavily restricted in Taiwan and not allowed on Yanyou.
